Empowering students to build global connections and make a true difference in the world.

Global Students Program

Cultivate the Next Generation of Trailblazers and Change-Makers

Our Global Students Program match schools, classrooms, youth groups and other organizations with projects in Africa that benefit children like them. Our mission is clear: to equip students with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration needed to challenge norms, break barriers, and drive tangible, positive change across the globe.

Cultivate Change Through Guided Lessons and Youth Humanitarian Projects

Our a 10-day curriculum guide students through lessons that teach the essentials of being a global citizen through the lens of a school garden project. Students build an understanding of what it means to think globally while acting locally while connecting concepts around sustainability, food systems, creative design, and cultural knowledge.

In addition to lessons, students have the opportunity to impact and fund an active project in Africa. Students work to brainstorm how they want to go about raising the funds and we connect them with a well-matched project and organization in places like Sierra Leone, Liberia and Rwanda.

Students Connecting With Students

Though the program, students have the opportunity to connect directly with students in the schools they're helping - through letter- and e-mail writing, or even video chats. Read about a well project in Liberia funded by a Madison-area high school class with our partner, Strides for Africa.

  • Sparking engagement is a critical first step in getting students and faculty involved in making a difference. For their icebreaker, students will work with one another to come up with their definition of what it means to be a global citizen. These responses will vary depending on an individual’s experiences and knowledge but by sharing responses with each another, students will be able to form a more holistic understanding of global citizenship. Teachers will have access to a variety of videos to share with their students to better inform them on global citizenship education.

  • Through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Students will learn about the different causes of hunger, nutrition crises around the world, and the term glocal: thinking globally but acting locally. Moreover, students will hear a lecture about sustainable agriculture and technology and play a game to better understand the journey their food takes to get to them.

  • Students will create a hypothetical school garden project to better understand the needs of their community. Going global, student will compare their own school garden the context of Sub-Saharan Africa, altering their garden to meet the needs of a different context.

  • Finally, with students keen on their global citizen education, they will build a final proposal to implement a school garden in Sub-Saharan Africa while ensuring collaboration with the local community and meeting the needs of the school.

Students will have their own fundraising campaign page where they will be able to raise funds for this school garden and see their proposal come to life.
